![]() ![]() I am always aware that what is happening is emotional. While I do feel very anxious and out of control, I never have any fear of death during these episodes, which is apparently typical for panic attacks. What makes me think my "panic attacks" could actually be meltdowns: I have physical signs typical for panic attacks like feeling dizzy/lightheaded, nauseated, sweaty, feverish etc. I have an overwhelming sense of dread and intense anxiety during those episodes, which is pretty much the definition of a panic attack The most I do is shake/cry, occasionally I have to sit or lie down, because I can't keep myself upright, but I don't yell or throw or hit anything ever. I never get in any way violent or act out of control. What makes me think my "panic attacks" could really be panic attacks: So I wonder, if anyone here knows more about these things than I do or maybe has both meltdowns and panic attacks, how do you tell the difference? And then I started wondering - could my panic attacks have not been panic attacks at all, but autistic meltdowns all along? Could this be why nothing worked for them? Recently, I've started the process of getting diagnosed for ASD or ADHD and I was asked about meltdowns (which I didn't think I had, apart from the panic attacks my default reactions to over stimulation were shutdowns). ![]() So I've been suffering from generalised anxiety disorder with panic attacks practically my entire life as far as I can remember, and while the things typically recommended for that (talk therapy, stress management, calming meds, etc.) do help a lot with general anxiety, nothing typically recommended for panic attacks has ever helped me with those.
